I could only find one report connected with this and it's a bit misleading !
Daily Gazette Middlesborough 3 June 1899
" While Mrs Burnhope of Brotherton and Mrs Warey of Liverpool and the son of the latter were walking on the bank of the Cut at Brotherton yesterday , the lad , in trying to reach a flower , fell in . The mother jumped in to save him , but the boy was drowned. The lady , fortunately , was got out alive and is progressing favourably. Mrs Warey only came to the village on a visit on Thursday night. "
Either the newspaper reported wrongly that the boy , not the mother , had died or she too died afterwards from the effects of the accident.
