Hello Catamaran
on the 1881 census the family are living in ospringe parish kent rose and George are down as born in America. the description of british subject American appears in later records I believe it is on the marriage cert to a harry boughton 24/12/1895 wye kent. Grandarog you are marvellous I made the assumption that they were baptised abroad smacked wrist for me.
Catamaran is there any way you could find a baptism for rose if she was baptised at all, you say your grandfather arrived in Philadelphia in the early 1900s do you mean that this is when migrated.

Ray B,

I was incorrect in my first posting.  The Backs emigrated from England to the US in 1895 when my grandfather (William) was 4 y.o.  The were sponsored by my great-grandmother's relative (a Glazebrook from Rodmell in Sussex).  Our last name was changed to Beck.  My great-grandfather was Kate's younger brother.  He worked as a victualer in the Half Moon Pub in Kent, and for some reason according to family lore, was thrown off the Constabulary before that.

Kate and her son, Arthur, are listed on the 1871 census as part of her parent's household, but Arthur is listed as 5 y.o. although he would have been born around that time so the record seems erroneous.  Her marriage banns to David Dray were posted that year, as well.

Thank you for info provided.
