Hi,

I've come over twice to the records office in Dublin and searched them. One of the ladies who worked in there searched alongside me and we came up with nothing.

It's so frustrating as I have family members who know the answers but say..leave the past where it is.

I made a promise to my mum before she passed away that I would continue looking, so I will and hopefully one day I will find the answers.

My nan spoke of being in the launderies  with the nuns but I'm not sure if that was in England, where she came to as she was pregnant outside of marriage or as a child. I have the records for her whilst she was in a home run by the nuns in Birmingham in 1945 and only her dad is listed not her mum so that was a dead end there too.

If you aren't even sure if some of these events took place in Ireland or England then you can't really get frustrated with Irish records. Unfortunately, this sort of story is not unique and, especially years ago, many people chose not to discuss past unpleasantness. Have you tried putting everything into timeline format to see exactly were the gaps are, etc.?

I have followed all other information and leads I have been given and have come up against dead ends.

It really is a last ditch attempt.

You don't close old threads but you can add to them at any time if and when you have more information or questions. I'm not sure that you have actually followed all possible leads

I really have and have spent thousands of pounds of flights , accommodation, copies of records and donations to various churches for any help they could give me.

Thank you for trying to help. I do very much appreciate it.

You haven't answered my questions about the timeline approach- sometimes it make clearer where the gaps are and how you might be able to fill them in. There are a huge number of Irish resources now online (many, many are free) so flights, etc. really have little to do with trying to trace your family.

Hi Michelle,

I don’t quite understand this. Was your Nan ‘pregnant outside of marriage’ or are you just speculating?
When did she arrive at the home and when did she leave?
Do you have marriage details for Nan? I don’t mean for you to post them just If you have a date in a timeline.
Ellen may have been in an institution somewhere after the births of the last child. The difficulty being that your events are quite recent so may not be published or available.
