Michael McCormick marriage to Mary Orr or Auld

I am looking for information on Michael McCormick (born c. 1806) in Ireland, who married Mary Orr (born c. 1816) in Ireland. (A later Scottish document referred to her as "Mary Auld" so not sure which surname is correct)

Michael and Mary had moved to Glasgow by 1836 where he was firstly a pottery labourer and then a spirits dealer in the Gallowgate area.


Known children were Agnes (born c. 1836), Mary (born c. 1838), Jane (born c. 1846), Sarah (born c, 1847), and Ellen/Helen (born c. 1849).


Did they marry in Ireland before moving to Scotland? Can anyone help with any early details of both/either? Thanks in advance.

Do you have death certificates for Michael and Mary?

Orr/Auld is a name that I have seen before in Ulster, ie the north.  The ones I have seen are in Co Derry.

There are records that you could be looking at to find out more
Census records some go back to the 1830s
Griffiths - often not all the family moved and the older ones may be on Griffiths
Another idea is to look at the Irish 1901/1911 census, look at the oldest ones  and see if you can track their forebears down

Also look to see if you can find births/deaths in the gaps

Another point regarding the names- Helen and Ellen will be used interchangeably but Ellen much more common in Ireland than Helen. Often an Ellen from Ireland will be known as Helen once in Scotland.
Agnes, Nancy, Ann(e) and sometimes Hannah all interchangeable.

Orr is a common surname in Ulster but Auld less so.

One thing I didn't notice mentioned yet is the family's religion.

There are Roman Catholic baptism records for Mary 1834,  Jane 1843, and Sarah 1847 (all Glasgow) available from Scotlands People. What names are given for sponsors?
Mother’s name varies  ORR / AULD / AULT

The 1871 census gives more detail about the place of birth in Ireland for Michael McCormick.
I assume you have this? Please post ALL information.

I assume you have Mary’s death certificate (1866) and know that her parents were John AULD and Catherine McMILLAN. What other information is included?

Have you considered that Mary Orr and Mary Auld might be different people?

I think Mary Auld/Ault and Mary Orr are the same person based on her maiden name for several of the daughters' marriages-

There are several possible reasons for the two names appearing at different times in records. One is that Mary was known by both surnames (name of natural father, name of mother, name of step-father or mother's partner).

Mmmmmmm?……. Not fully convinced.
Mary (1st born child ) is baptised with mother as ORR, and marries with mother as ORR.
All others are baptised with mother as AULD, and marry with mother as AULD.
