Can anyone help me identify what was the reason for presenting this cross (see photo attached) to my grandfather John Brennan. It is in a presentation box.
The inscription reads:- "Presented to John Brennan By Pope Pius XI. 1929"
I'm assuming that it has something to do with the Eucharistic Congress in Ireland that year. Many thanks.

I can’t see anything about the Congress, but the Vatican City became a sovereign state in Feb 1929,possible connection ?

Thanks mazi and stanmapstone for the replies and correct date of the Congress. Will follow-up the Vatican lead.
