Jane TUTTON nee RICHARDSON
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 13:37 BST (UK) »
I am attaching photograph of Jane wife of William Tutton (see previous post).  She was born in Nottingham in about 1832 and died in Shrewsbury in about 1907.

The reverse of the image has a handwritten name of J Lancaster, Birkenhead who is presumably the photographer and is numbered with a small sticker as 7122.  William's is numbered sequentially with the same style of sticker as 7121 but is a different photographer? Roger

My guess would be early-mid 1860s.

One from me too.

There's quite of bit of info on the other photographer, Josiah Groom. He had studios in Shrewsbury probably between the late 1850's and early 1880's. See http://www.cartedevisite.co.uk/photographers-category/biographies/g-to-l/josiah-groom/.

I couldn't find much on J Lancaster (Birkenhead) though there are a couple of cards on e-bay bearing his name. J Lancaster - based in Birmingham - was also the name of a company that made early cameras at a series of shops rather than in a factory. It might be coincedence or there might  be a connection. See http://www.historiccamera.com/cgi-bin/librarium2/pm.cgi?action=app_display&app=datasheet&app_id=1503

Thanks to all who sent me a restored photo.  I have added them all to my album and will use them on my tree in rotation.

Mike's link to the Josias Groom Shrewsbury photographer is interesting - he was certainly a busy chap in his relatively short life!  Also Carol surmised that the the photo of Jane was taken in the 1860s by the Birkenhead phtographer.  This would seem right as in 1861 the family lived in Everton, Liverpool and their third son William (he went on to become a Methodist minister) was baptised at Liverpool St Mary Magdalene in 1860.  By 1871 the family had moved to Shrewsbury at some point in the preceding 10 years.  Despite his unruffled demeanour it appears that Alfred was on the move to avoid his creditors!

In the course of my photo learning curve I have run up against one odd problem and wonder if someone could help.  If I set my scanner to the "best" setting (the default is about 80%) it produces an image that is well in excess of 500kbs.  When I attempt to reduce the pixel size using IrfanView it reduces a lot and then I can't get it to increase again to anywhere near the original size.
I can work round this by gradually reducing the scanner setting from best until I get an image at just below 500kbs and then I don't have to bother with IrfanView.

I hope that this makes sense and that I'm not being thick! :-[
