Mitchell of Airdrie

Hello,
I have notice that on one of my ancestors birth cert the following
1858 Birth

Mother - Rose Ann Mitchell MS Dowds, Bridewell Airdrie
Father - James Mitchell Coal Miner
Registered by Ann Mitchell, Aunt

I have a sneaking suspicion that Bridewell is either a Prison or a very poor area of town.  I can trace Rose Ann and James after this, but I cannot find Ann Mitchell, Aunt anywhere.

I was trying to trace Ann as she is the only link I have with Rose Ann and James before they came to Scotland from Ireland around 1855

What year was Ann Mitchell born was Mitchell her maiden name ?

The National Library of Scotland website has town maps for Airdrie, on the 1846 map there is a Bridewell Lane, by 1858 it had changed to Market Street, the prison was situated between Anderson Street and Market Street, the birth may have been in a house in Bridewell Lane and not in the prison.

The baby was also Rose Ann Mitchell, the same as her mothers whose maiden name was Dowds.  The baby was registered by Ann Mitchell, Aunt and that is all I know about Ann Mitchell.  This all happened in 1858 in Airdrie.  Both the James Mitchell and the Rose Ann Dowds came from a Ireland in 1855, I am trying to work backwards and had hoped that I could with Ann Mitchell

Have you not been able to find a death for James Mitchell to see if any parents are named assuming this Ann is his sister ?

Hi Rosie,
I have James Mitchell’s Parents although it sometimes changes, I was hoping to back track through Ann or her husband depending who was the Mitchell to try and firm up James Mitchell’s Parents.

Parents are possibly Samuel Mitchell and Jane Elliott although they did not name any of their children Samuel, but there is a Jane.

I meant to add the both Samuel and Jane were both dead by 1855 when James and Roseann married.

Who were the witnesses ? would I be correct in saying Rose ann in prison 1871/1881 Census
Had a quick look on the Electoral Rolls for Glasgow but not much luck  ...Be quite hard to find her not being sure if she was married to a Mitchell or if that was her maiden name ...
