It is a better way to exit but I don't always do it.

It's a minor thing but I do it every few days

I just can't tell you how much I appreciate all your help with this.   

I posted as much detail as I could in the hope that it might help anyone who was unfortunate enough to find themselves in the same situation.

I hope everything works..... basically the update created a shadow copy of your profile, but didn't delete it after update so the computer had 2 of you and didn't know which one to use.

Hence the   "\desktop is not available"  notice!

I used "way 3", holding down the shift key from the sign in page and following your instructions from there, I really am grateful as I thought I was going to have to take it in for repair.
