Windows 10 update - BIG trouble!

OK.

The Shift/Right click the Power icon and selecting Restart worked up to a point.

I followed it through to Advanced Options - Start up settings - but after selecting my user name and inputting my password and it thinking for a couple of minutes, it gave me a message saying it couldn't repair my start up.

I'm now sitting looking at the Reset My PC options which are
1. Keep my Files (Removes apps and settings but keeps your personal files)
2. Remove Everything (Removes all of your personal files, apps and settings)

I back up my personal files every week, but am still going for Option 1.

Yes, Option 1 is probably best for you.


When shutting down...choose

Sign Out

that leaves Windows running with no one signed it

then go Shutdown from that screen.. you have to click the screen and get the Power Icon at bottom right.

If it is successful.... do the 2 stage shutdown anyway!

When it got to 100% the system automatically switched itself off and then back on again.  Now it says it's

Installing Windows (now at 26%)
Don't turn off your PC. This will take a while.
Your PC will re-start several times.

So, I'll leave it to its own devices and come back later and see where I am with it then.

OK, here's where I am:

After a couple of automatic switch offs/switch ons etc, the system came to rest at my login/signin screen, so I signed in.  Then got

We have some updates for you
This may take a few minutes
Please don't switch your PC off

Oh no, I thought, but let it run its course and now I have something that looks vaguely like my regular Desktop.

I have icons called
Recycle Bin
HP Smart Friend
Removed Apps
Microsoft Edge

and along the bottom ribbon I have (from the left)

The Windows Button (that gives a list of programs etc when I click on it, including ones that weren't on the PC when I bought it)
Search bar
Task View
Edge icon
File Explorer Icon (that gives, what looks like, a full list of all my files/folders etc)
Microsoft Store Icon
Email icon

and over towards the right hand all my usual icons and a message under Settings that says
"Your device's diagnostic data level has been set to Full by your administrator or organisation"

So, so far, so good.  Phew!

I don't seem to have a Sign Out option.  When I click the Power button my only options are Sleep, Shut Down or Restart.

Any advice, please?

Oh yes, I have that.  Never used it before, so didn't know it was there.

So, click that then?  Right?

Yes Sign Out... this kills all links/shortcuts to your desktop

this get you to a screen similar to sign in screen

click on it and you should get Power Icon, bottom Right select shutdown
