applying to the MOD

i am looking to get the records of my grandfather . but i do not know his service number and his full name could be wrong . i have a death cert but i am not 100% sure this was the name he used in army he had a colorful life and this might not be his name .  what can i do now any help would be great as i don't want to send money and i am on the wrong person as i don't have much money to spare thanks

The MOD don't require his service number - although it's easier if you have it.
Also, if they can't find any records, your money will be returned.

i could if i new it on my father birth cert it is different from his sister but the same man and the same name on his marriage cert as my  father birth cert he is William and Thomas  so i unsure weather to hold off for now or just apply and see

Can you clarify please? Is his first name William on one document and Thomas on the other? Are these the only differences? Does his surname stay the same?

Do you know his date and place of birth? It may help the MOD find his records assuming he gave the correct details upon enlistment.

If I were you I would apply for the service record anyway, giving all the details you have and explaining that he may have enlisted under X name or X name.

If you don't have his service number you will need his date of birth - establish that first.

i don't know for sure 1905 is the closes that matches with death but still don't know if that is him only think so.
