For this Catherine - she was listed as a widow on her death certificate so he predeceased her. I have checked every Statutory David Brown in Fife and Glasgow and not found him (yet lol)

We have them in 1851 together, have you found them together in 1861 & 1871 as you don't say when in 1871 Catherine died?
It's quite possible he may have emigrated in the 1850s as many did but it would be interesting to know if they were together in 1861 or if he's awol to know what her status was then?

Add...You're not alone as I have one who I can't find a death for yet although his wife remarried as a widow. There are births of children outwith the privacy years which may/may not be his & he's too distant a relative for me to spend £s on full certs.
