River Tyne Lass,

A long time has passed - but if you are still interested, this may be the Mary mentioned in previous posts:

On the death of William Innis at The Blue Bell Inn, Lanchester, Mary Innis took over the licence and was still there until 1841 when the pub was sold.  She was next heard of in the 1841 Census and was living at Black Burn, Lanchester.  I can find no trace of Black Burn there BUT there is another pub virtually next door to the Blue Bell and it is called The Black Bull and she was living with a family named Senior - a young couple half her age.  20 years later the Black Bull was still in the hands of a family named Senior.

I hope this is helpful,
elliven

Addition to previous post.  They did not live in the pub but in a cottage in the grounds of the Black Bull

Also a correction - Mary Senior nee Innis was the landlady of the Black Bull pub in 1861 but her tenure was no more than 2 years.  I don't know whether Emma Senior was living with her.  Her mother, Mary Innis had died in January of that year.  Emma Senior  had previously been in the Half Moon pub in Durham City.

Thank you so much, Elliven for your research and posts.  I wonder where Mary Innis (snr) may be buried and also husband William Innis?  Her daughter Mary Senior nee Innis is buried at Elswick Cemetery.  One day if I locate her it would be nice to link them up on Find a Grave.  Husband Edward is at St Oswald.
Before covid I went to visit the Half Moon pub in Durham to see where these ancestors lived and worked.
It is a mystery that Edward Senior seems to have come from a wealthy background and was left a lot of money by his parents in their wills.  He was once a gentleman farmer before taking on pub work.  However, he doesn't appear to have left any will when he died and neither does he appear to have a gravestone.  Perhaps all the money was gone by the time Mary became the proprietor of the Half Moon?
I did come across an article once about these Marys being charged for allegedly serving someone at the Half Moon - I think it was on a Sunday morning out of pub hours.

Hello River Tyne Lass,

Mary Innis (nee Dodds) was buried on 25th January 1861 (aged about 73) at St Oswald's churchyard, Shincliffe, Durham.

Thank you so much, Elliven.  Would this be the same St Oswald's that my Grt x 2 Grandfather Edward Senior is buried at, shown above?
My SiL and I visited this cemetery some years before Covid.  It is only a short walk from the Half Moon pub.

River Tyne Lass,

Yes, I think so.  I am more familiar with the opposite end of the parish but this is the nearest Church of St. Oswald that I can think of.  Since Edward Senior was her son in law and she went to live with her daughter and Edward, it seems to be the obvious place for her to be buried.

Thanks for this, Elliven.  I agree that it sounds like this St Oswald's would have been the likeliest for burial going off where she was living.
I will link Mother and daughter up on Find a Grave.
