Yes it sure was. Probably no different to today, just less children, but maybe more marriages

Just found a family tree for Jane Bartram. This shows details on the marriage to Thomas Evans:
28 Jun. 1847 Parish Church of St. Martin, Tipton, Staffs, England.
Witnesses: John and Elizabeth Evans. Father of Bride shown to be Thomas Bartram, a Caster. Father of Groom shown to be James Evans, a labourer. Groom's occupation = Sinker. They don't show Louisa Jane on it. Not surprisingly if she was raised by aunt and uncle and missed off someone's research.
They have Thomas Evans as having died in 1872 in Oldbury, Worcestershire. Jane Bartram/Evans then is showing as having remarried William Corker (who showed as a lodger with the couple in 1871).
Jane's mother Hannah is showing with the maiden name of MILLARD and looks to have died in 1866 in West Bromwich area.
Jane herself is showing as having died in 1878 in Oldbury, Worcestershire.
