John Sewell, Felstead, 1812
« on: Sunday 07 August 05 15:17 BST (UK) »
Hi, look up and or help to find:
John Sewell, Married to Elizabeth ? prior to 1812. Children are all born in Felstead Essex, Elizabeth 1812, John 1815, Thomas 1816, George 1820, and Henry 1822. We do not have a surname for Elizabeth, nor a marriage date, we have a possible birth year for elizabeth as 1788, and John 1795?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Felstead or Felsted is in Dunmow district, so we have no 1851 to work with.

Lots of Sewell in Felsted, 1841, but ages are wrong.
May be brothers, uncles, cousins. The names are right.

John b. 1795, m. 1812 ? ?

Tell us more about your sources.

Just in case the year of birth for Elizabeth & John are incorrect, here are a couple of Sewell marriages in Felsted PRs that I noticed "in passing" a few years ago.

John Sewell & Elisabeth Cable 31 Oct 1793.
Joseph Sewell & Elizabeth Collins 6 Nov 1802.

Good luck.
Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

We have a definate birth date of Henry Sewell as 15/12/1822 taken by my uncle from the parish records at Felstead some years ago, and his marriage certificate stating the name of his father as John Sewell.
The Sole society provided us with siblings for Henry and birth dates from their records, which matched Henry's birth date that we already had, and a birth date for John of 1795. We also had this as a possible date from pallots baptism index.
We have therefore presumed that the marriage is prior to 1812 as this is the year of the oldest known siblings' birth.
All the children were born at Felstead so we hope that John and Elizabeth, whose name is also from the Sole Society, were local all their lives.
The occupation that we have in 1855 on the marriage certificate of Henry for John is farmer.
I hope that this helps to confirm some possible candidates!
Thanks

Sewell is very common name in the area around Felsted. Lots of Sewells in Little Dunmow and Stebbing. Might be worth trying these two villages.
