Can anyone tell me whether oysters and/or scallops were ever caught off the Hartlepool coast?
Thanks. Louise

As far as I can see there were no oyster fisheries off the north east coast.

At least in modern times, oysters and scallops are not commercially harvested in this area.

I'm looking at the 1880s rather than modern period. I know they were common off the south coast but haven't heard of them being found off Hartlepool.

British Newspaper archive for 1880, NE England, only has articles on scalloped curtains and potatoes.

Thanks all. That map is fantastic. From what I can make out there were no, or very scarce, oyster beds around the Tees estuary.
