1939 address of workhouse Birkenhead

Hello,

please can anyone tell me if the 'institution' at 56 Church Rd, Birkenhead  in 1939 was the workhouse?

It was originally the Workhouse but later became Birkenhead Municipal Hospital.

Not sure when that happened?

Sounds like it - see http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Birkenhead/ which refers to the workhouse becoming

56 Church Road, Tranmere. The workhouse later became Birkenhead Municipal Hospital then, in recent times, was known as St Catherine's Community Hospital

The Tranmere and Birkenhead addresses appear to be the same both from this link http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=482051.0 and looking at the maps.

Thanks to the contributors on the other links, especially Peter Higginbotham - note that towards the end of his page, there is a list of addresses used as children's homes in that Union.

"It had ceased to be a 'Workhouse' in the 19th and early 20th century tradition but continued to operate a Public Assistance Institution until the abolition of the Poor Laws in 1948. The Workhouse Infirmary had become the Birkenhead Union Infirmary until 1934, then it was known as the Birkenhead Municipal Hospital until 1948, and thereafter St. Catherine’s Hospital. "

There was a hospital attached to the workhouse and Birkenhead Archives have admission and discharge books  It also says who took them in to the hospital and the dates. Its well worth a look as the names are in alphabetical order

I was born there at Ste. Catherine’s in 1943.  In one if the comments I recognized the name of Provost Hazlehurst, he was the parish priest at St. Joseph’s Church, my parish.
