I find the free weekends very useful. Otherwise I have to go to my local library to use the free Library editions which have most of the information. I will subscribe only if i need to.

The problem is SilverGrowler, surely if everyone did that Ancestry would soon collapse, they rely on subscribers to stay in business.

I see what I was doing wrong: I was going in via "Free Access" at the top of the screen.
Nobody told me I should just pretend to be a subscriber.
Now I get the reference numbers: thanks!

See attached two images.  The first shows the suggestions buttons as they appear normally (the one you want is the 2nd one down, they are "white" on grey).  The second one shows when open and source selected, the appropriate button appears green as expanded.

Ignore where it says "1900 US Census", that's the usual Ancestry anomaly showing the wrong data set, you can see its the 1911 Census.

Thanks, smudwhisk, but it doesn't look anything like that on my screen.
I get just + and - buttons, and above them arrows for navigating (though I can also click and drag the image).

In the meantime, by not being so naive as to click on "Free Access", I've found two folio numbers that were illegible before, and shall carry on like that.  It seems less slow, too.

And they do have some weird transcripts, don't they?

This hasn't encouraged me to go with Ancestry. I much prefer the layout and feel of FindMyPast.

Surely each library is paying a lot to Ancestry for the library edition, and if people like SilverGrowler continue to support their local library, the library will continue to pay Ancestry for their service.

I found on one occasion with Ancestry when I cancel a years subscription within a month of starting they cancel the whole year and fully refunded what I paided.

That is all well and good Rosie, but if I click on it. I am cancelling my sub. now and I do not want to do that

They have to let it run until the end of the subscription date as you've paid for that.
