1891 lookup for Brice please
« on: Saturday 06 August 05 19:50 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find information from the 1891 census on Ann Eliza Brice (nee Bookless) and William Henry Brice who married in Bristol in 1882. Ann was born around 1854 - I have no idea when William was born.

They should be in Bristol (probably in or near Bedminster) and have two children, Ann and Ellen.

Any help is greatly apprieciated.

Regards

Could not find a suitable Ann, the only eliza in the area was a SINGLE draper's assistant, b 1856 Bristol living Bedminster.
Birthplaces (including Ann's) and where/when the kids were born should help if you want me to search again.

Thanks for looking Pauline.

The 1901 census only lists Ann's place of birth as Bristol. William is dead by then so I'm not sure if it will be possible to add any more data to this search.

Thanks again for trying.

Were either of the kids born prior to 1891?

Death indexes also list ages at death from about 1865? onwards.
You may get an idea of the father's age from that (if you find the right one).

Ann was born 1883 & Eliza 1888. Ive never tried to find death records - it seems like looking for aneedle on a haystack - I've over 10 years to look between and there are a fair number of William Brices in the area.

Still I think it may be my only option.

Thanks again.

Hi!

FreeBMD shows that the death of a William Henry Brice was registered in the district
of Bedminster in the Qtr to Sept 1889. His age was given as 32, so he would have been
born in about 1857.

FreeBMD also has entries for the births of Ann Adelaide Brice in the Qtr to June 1883
and Ellen Maud Brice in the Qtr to June 1888 - both in the district of Bedminster.

I think it is likely that the Eliza that Pauline found on the 1891 census is the person you
are looking for and that the entry has been either incorrectly recorded or mistranscribed.

In the 1881 census, there is an Eliza Bookless born in Bristol in about 1856, working as
a general servant in the household of Edward Elphick, a tailor and outfitter at 15 High
Street, Bristol.

Also, do you know what William Brice's occupation was at the time of his marriage?
It's just that the 1881 census has a William Brice who was born in Wellington, Somerset
in about 1858. He is a lodger in the house of Thomas Newport, a cooper, at 17 Weir's
Buildings, Bedminster. His occupation is given as a butler.

There are a few other possibilities, but this seems a likely candidate for your William as
he may have settled in Bedminster after his marriage as this was where he worked.

Hope this helps!

Hi

That's all very useful. I've found the GRO for their marriage certificate and have ordered it, so I should hopefully be able to progress this search some more shortly.

Thanks to both of you

I have the marriage cert now. William Henry Brice is down as a labourer.

His father (also William Henry Brice) is listed as a seaman.  Ann's father (John Bookless) is listed as a carriage maker. This is the first time any of my ancestors have been anything other than Ag. Labourers, and I've read many times of trade lists - but where to I find them and what am I looking for?

Thanks
