Old friend of dad's

How do I find an old friend of my dad's.  I have no name except that it begins with p and he was staying in a big house in getting/getting crossing in Shropshire where soldiers stayed.  All I know is he transferred himself in 1956 from there but I don't know where to.

The area mentioned in previous posting should read betton/betton crossing not getting.  Sorry

Without a name and given the timescale - how would anybody know who he was?  P could be Paul/Peter/Philip etc etc so how would you determine whether you had the right person?

It is now 62yrs later so is this person still going to be alive?
