Home children sent by Sheffield Union/ Fir Vale Workhouse

Hi
 I would like to hear about any children who were sent to Canada via other agencies from Sheffield (Fir Vale) Workhouse. I am a volunteer at the Hospital History group at Fir Vale and know about some of the children but would like to hear more.

Have you searched through the British Home Chidren Section ?  Noticed there are children listed who were sent by Barnados from Sheffield to Canada.

Yes based on what I already know I am ploughing my way through all sorts of records relating to Sheffield Guardians. They sent children out by various agencies and I would love to hear about what happened to some of these children once they arrived. I have had some descendants get in touch with me before but I would like to have a database of all the children who were sent from Fir Vale Sheffield. Perhaps one day.... I do have a query on one particular child Frank Rymill who was sent out there and he disappeared after so many inspections. He belongs to my granddaughter's maternal family.

Is that the Frank Rymill - 1891 birth - 9c 574 - mothers maiden name Clevery ?

Appears in 1901 Children's Home -  Brightside Bierlow, Yorkshire with a brother Thomas Rymill aged 12 years - Frak Rymill 11 years ?

What information have you got so far ?  When was your last UK sighting ?

Many of the agencies sent back reports from Canada to the poor law unions in England detailing the progress of individual children. Where this correspondence survives, it is filed in series MH 12 at the National Archives (Kew). For most unions, including Sheffield, it peters out in the mid 1890s. There are also papers in MH 19/9 for a few years only, around 1890. As you don’t give any dates, I don’t know if any of this will be relevant for you.

These reports are not online, they are not name-indexed online, and a personal research visit to Kew is required. But if you have the time to search through the volumes for the appropriate dates, the findings can be very rewarding.

Sadly Edward Hamilton born 7 July 1896 - arrived May 1909 on the Corsican -  was killed in action and died 10 November 1917. (Belgium)
These are his Canadian Attestation Papers - Edward was a tailor by trade - 44 th Overseas Battalion - signed up 26 April 1915 - papers show that he had a sister Mrs Harrison Harworth Hill, Harworth, Near Bawtry. Doncaster (that's where his medals were dispatched to)

Most Canadian Attestation Papers have been digitalized but can be slow to down load - (42 pages in this case)

There are also Canadian Attestation papers for Joseph Dance born 23 January 1899 Sheffield -
sister Alice Dance, Sheffield. Joseph Dance was a farm labourer.  37 th Halimand Rifles - Regiment Number 270636 - residence  Dunnville, Ontario. Attested 12 February 1917 Brantford Ontario.  Discharged because he was under age - 13 April 1917 -  Address C/O Harold Melomls, RR No 8, Dunnville. Ontario.
