Hi all, In doing my family tree i get back to Catherine Mark b.c.1834, father Hugh Mark b.c.1796 Ireland, wife Mary Smith, his parents Robert Mark & Anne Gillespie ? Hugh had come to Scotland from Ireland, would love to find out where in Ireland he came from and whether he was married there or in Scotland, have found some of this info on Scotland's People site , David.

Hi, Thanks for the reply, looked at the links, Hugh is listed in Scottish census 1841/51/71, according to the returns he was been born c.1796 Ireland, he married a Mary Smith, I wondered where about the Marks may have come from in Ireland. David.

You can use this site to see where in Ireland surnames were most common in the mid 1800s:

For Mark(s) & Gillespie it’s Antrim, Down and other Ulster counties. (Which is fairly common for people who moved to Scotland to work).  As a very general rule, you often see people from Ulster going to Scotland, people from Dublin and the midlands of Ireland going to Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester and northern England, and people form Cork and southern Ireland going to Wales and London. Of course there are many exceptions to that but for Irish migrants in Scotland, I would start looking in the counties of Ulster first, before widening the search.

Statutory registration of non RC marriages started in Ireland in 1845. Prior to that you need to rely on church records. Not all churches have records for the early 1800s and not all of those that do are on-line.  You could try rootsireland but there are many records that are not on their site, especially for the early 1800s. Sometimes you need to know the denomination and location in order to find a marriage record from the 1830s.  Can be tricky.
