I think Arthur William Farmer might be a relative.
Does anyone know anything of his life before 1918?

I don't know whether you have Arthur's WW1 military record? It has been fully digitized courtesy of Library and Archives Canada. I thought I would post it in case you haven't seen it. See link below. There are 48 pages in total. It will probably be very slow to download.
