Identify a cap badge

Could anyone identify the regiment of the man on the right of this photo please?

Looks to me like the Royal Tank Regiment, which seems in keeping with the background of the photo.

Thanks for the reply, I was watching a programme on tv when I saw this image, the guy on the right looked so much like my Dad that I put the computer on and used snipping tool to try and catch it but couldn't see the cap badge clearly, he was in the 51st Highland/Black Watch so looks like it wasn't him.  I have seen a clip of him about 30-40 years ago on an episode about liberation on the World at War, it was exactly how he described the scene sat on a tank with all these young women racing after them and the crowd cheering, unfortunately every time I've checked all the relevant World at War episodes I've never come across that clip again, ironically he was out of the room at the time it was on and we didn't have a video recorder, didn't even have a colour tv in those days

Hi Julie,

I'm not an expert on such things, but a quick read of a couple of web pages seem to indicate that there were tank units attached to the 51st (Highland) Division. So it may be possible that it may still be him. I will leave it to those more knowledgeable than me to say if this is feasible.

Good evening,

The divisional/brigade patch on the right arm tells us it was 29th infantry brigade. This was made up of quite a number of inf units plus supporting arms but only one armoured unit.

This was "B" SS sqn RAC from aug 42 until jun 43 so that is presumably who we are looking at. Not sure what the "SS" stands for, maybe special service. Will see what I can find.

Added; the order of battle for 51st div 1939 to 40 shows no armoured units. They were not involved in dunkirk having escaped westwards and were attached to the French army. When the Germans rolled up the French 10000 men of the 51st were captured and sent to stalag XX A. The reinstated 51st after 1940 also shows no armoured units in the order of battle. John.

I would go with a Churchill but wouldn't like to say what mk. Without seeing what is up top in the way of armament it's impossible to say as that view would look the same on all of them.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the info Dad served 1943-1947, he was posted to Fort George for his training before going to Ireland then onto Europe if I remember correctly, he didn't talk a lot about the war too many bad memories, he stayed behind to help with the relief effort.
