Andrew Brown, b. 1860 Blackburn
« on: Monday 25 December 17 16:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I was hoping that someone in the Lancashire area could help me please, on Andrew Brown my Gt. Grandfather, and as to his whereabouts in the 1881 census? I would have thought he would have been in the vicinity in 1881, as he joined the East Lancashire Regiment in 1882, no Joy!

Both his parents, George and Elizabeth were deceased by this time and I can't find him living with any siblings, or anywhere else in the surrounding area!

My thoughts are that, he may have been in an institution, prison, hospital, workhouse or similar! Reasons for this line of thinking is that, his father George was in the debtors gaol before Andrew was born (no great crime). His son Henry b.1888, ended up in a Young Offenders Institution in 1901 in Glasgow! Just wondering if there was some dubious dealings in the ways in the family! He wont be found in the 1891 census, as he was serving with the army in Ireland!

Any help, I'd be very grateful for!
Thank you,
Ray

Just as a matter of interest, is there an address for Andrew when he joined up in 1882?

I haven't looked at the 1881 census yet  :)

Assuming I've got the right attestation papers (on FindMyPast):

He joined East Lancs Regt at Burnley 3rd August 1882.
Regimental No: 235
Born Blackburn, Lancs
Age: 22 yrs 7 months
Occupation: Groom
Religion: Presbyterian

Served in E. Lancs Rgt 1882-1894
Next of Kin: (Brother) David Brown, Leyland St, Blackburn
Married: 13 Oct 1886, Enniskillen to Mary McKennagh(?}

A marriage register image posted on ancestry (I'm guessing by the same Ray) gives his father as George Irving brown.

I can't see him on the 1881 census though.

Thank you for reply Bumble B.
No Unfortunately he doesn't give an address, only Blackburn!

He does give his next of Kin as his brother David Brown b.1841, living in Leyland St., Blackburn. Andrew doesn't appear to be in that house in 1881!

Thanks,
Ray

Hi Aulus,
Thank you for the reply!
You are spot on, that is him, I have the Find My Past Attestation Papers! Just trying to find what he was up to in 1881! Was he just a young foolhardy rogue who lost his way, or just mistranscribed in the census?

My guess would be that he's mistranscribed under the surname of the head of household: when I've eventually found lots of my lost ones, that's how they've been hidden.

I'm afraid, it's a matter of searching without the surname and looking at every Andrew in Blackburn and Burnley born c. 1860.  The good news is that you have an occupation from 1882 that might confirm a possible match.

That's a good idea Aulus, didn't think of using a first name only in the search! Andrew isn't the most common name in England, so may make the task easier! Just glad he wasn't called John or James!

Thanks again,
Ray

Thanks lancsann,
At least I know not to look for Groom as his occupation! Spent a large part of yesterday looking for an Andrew, born Lancashire, b. 1860 + or - 2 years. Eyes were giving in, before I got to the end, still no joy!
Thank you,
Ray
