Edmond Edwards' C15th & C16th
« on: Wednesday 20 December 17 13:57 GMT (UK) »
I am attaching an extract from the 1575 Visitation of Cambridgeshire which repeats in the 1619 publication as well.

The footman link seems to refer to E1, H7 & H8 depending on which visitation one looks at.

The Edwards family are not in my direct line but they do marry with other families in & around Wisbech who are ancient grandparents.

I have been trying to investigate the 2 Edmond's to prove or disprove this alleged link and cannot find anything about them. Far to early for PR's and I have been unable to find wills or other records at the National Archives.

Am I missing something obvious?

Any help would really be appreciated.

thanks

Edward

Im in search of my Edwards English Roots.  My earliest proven ancestor is William Edwards (1615-1678).  He was the Burgess of Surry County, VA in 1652, and brought his wife Dorothy over in 1648 according to Land patents and Virginia Legislative Records.  His Great-Grandson Issac Edwards (d. 1775) of New Bern, NC had a coat of arms on his family bible.  The Arms survives today.  Upon researching the Crest was given to Thomas Edwards, High Baliff, Isle of Ely, Queen Ann... and is the same description as the Wisbech Edwards visitation you speak of.  I have started researching the Wisbech Edwards and I came across this...

*According to the picture and researching, Thomas Edwards, High Baliff (Commonwealth) was in 1670!  No Edwards appear as Baliffs of Wisbech after 1670!

(James I)
William Edwards 1606, 1649
Thomas Edwards 1613
William Edwards, Jr. 1638
Robert Edwards 1640

(Commonwealth)
James Edwards 1658, 1663, 1664, 1665
Thomas Edwards 1670 <--- m. Camilla Browne and the one mentioned in the picture.

Thanks for your replies, must admit is a while since I looked at this bunch so I'll need a little time to review. The Wisbech book again shows a query on whether the Edmond the footman was employed by H7 or E1.

So looking at the suggested monarchs we have
Henry VII - King 1485 - 1509
Henry VIII - King 1509 - 1547
Elizabeth 1 - Queen from 1558 - 1603
===
Thomas Edwards m Katherine Crosse in Jun 1566 which gives him an estimated birth date of around 1540-45, he died in 1596 so a reasonable estimate.
Apart from the Visitations, I have not (yet) found any evidence that his father was Edmond or that his grandfather was another Edmond.
If we accept that this is correct and we apply the 25-30 generation gap, then Edmond (the possible father) was born around 1515 and his father around 1485.
Based on this logic H7 is the probable employer but no supporting evidence again. Unless he was a footman to a prince or princess first.
As I said in the original post "The Edwards family are not in my direct line but they do marry with other families in & around Wisbech who are ancient grandparents." So nice to know rather than needing to know.
