Look-ups 1841/51/61 - PLUMLEY
« on: Wednesday 09 February 05 23:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello

My great-grandmother is named on her marriage certificate as Emily Jane Plumley, father William Plumley, age "full".  From 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses, I gauged her year of birth to be approx 1862/1863 and place of birth to be Shepton Mallet.  When I looked for a birth certificate for her, the only Emily Plumley I could find was born 1860 - father William, so I incorrectly assumed that this was my Emily.

When the 1871 census went online, I found there were 2 Emily Plumleys and that the certificate I had found was not for mine!  However, my Emily had a sister Anne - she was born 1864 and I found her birth certificate and sent for it.  This shows Anne's mother as Sarah Plumley, but no father is listed.  I'm not sure if the reason I can't find Emily's certificate is that she was registered in her father's name - or whether Sarah was married to a William Plumley but Anne was not his child.

I have found that Sarah Plumley died in the Shepton Mallet area in the Jan - Mar period of 1870 age 36 years, so would have been approx 37 in 1871 and would have been born approx 1834.

Sorry this is longwinded, but would someone please look to see if they can find a Sarah Plumley age approx 27 in the 1861 Shepton Mallet, approx 17 in 1851 Shepton Mallet, approx 7 in 1841 .... trying to find out if Plumley was her maiden name.

Thank you.

Su

Hi,

on the 1851 these are the only 2 Plumley's listed in Shepton Mallet.

James is on his own as a servant,

Sarah (age looks more like 36) is unmarried and living alone with 2 servants.

PLUMLEY James Servant 15 Errand Boy Croscombe, Som. / Shepton Mallet 51
PLUMLEY Sarah 36/56 Fund Holder St Brides Middlesex. / Shepton Mallet 51

Hope that gives you something to work on.

Hi Sue

Thanks for that - they may both be related but fairly certain the Sarah you've found is not the correct one.  Will keep this info and see if it links in anywhere.

1841/1851/1861 - LEWIS
« Reply #3 on: Thursday 10 February 05 22:29 GMT (UK) »
Still on the trail of my elusive Sarah Plumley!  After her death in 1870, her two daughters (Emily, 8, and Anne,7) are living with a couple who may be their grandparents - in 1871 they are living in Bodden, Doulting.

Grateful if someone would try to find this couple in Somerset 1841, 51 or 61 censuses - trying to see if they have a daughter named Sarah:

Stephen Lewis, born c1807, Sodbury Gloucestershire
Mary Lewis, born c1806, Milborne Port, Somerset

Any help will be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Su

Hi Su,

It's still a mystery.
From Beaviongton's Transcriptions.
HO 107/1933, folio 431,  pg 4, shd 12
LEWIS Stephen, 44yrs, Freestone Mason, born Sodbury GLS.
LEWIS Mary, 45 yrs, born Milborne Port. SOM.

Nobody else with them.
There are quite a few Sarah LEWIS'S visiting other rellies in 1851.
Do you know when she was born or where?

Cheers
Geoff

Hi Geoff

thanks for info ... not sure whether she was Sarah Lewis or whether this couple just took two orphans in!  Sarah Plumley was 36 when she died - I don't have the death cert yet, though have ordered it.  Death was registered in Jan - Mar 1870, so she was born c. 1834.

 Su,

In the '51 census there are 3 possibles {aged 16-18} if she is a LEWIS.

Two born in Bristol & the other born in Batheaston.
The death cert should at least tell her fathers name & occupation, that would help to find her.

1841/1851 Worminster - PLUMLEY
« Reply #7 on: Tuesday 03 May 05 13:00 BST (UK) »
If anyone is checking up the 1841 or 1851 Worminster area census, grateful if you'd be kind enough to see if there is any trace of a Sarah Plumley born c1833/1834.  Trying desperately to locate her with her parents ... or other family.

For info - on 1861 she is a dairymaid (age 28) at Bodden Farm, Bodden, Doulting, nr Shepton Mallet.  Her birthplace is noted as Worminster, Somerset.  Between 1863 and 1864 she gives birth to my gt-gt grandmother and her sister but there is no trace of a husband, although I believe the older child may have been registered with her father's surname as I can find no trace of her birth certificate; the younger daughter's birth certificate has no father's name.  Sarah dies in Shepton Mallet in January 1870 age 36 years - her death certificate describes her as the widow of William Plumley, ag lab, but I now think this may be a red herring!

Thank you

Su

Hi Su

The only Plumleys I can find in Wormington in 1851 are these:
HO 107/1934  Folio 235  Page 10  Part of Out Parish St.Cuthbert, Worminster and District

Plumley, Samuel 52 Ag.Lab   Burrington
Amelia  48   Worminster
Emma 18     Worminster

Next door is a Thomas Plumley/Lodger/23/Ag Lab/Worminster
at the home of Elizabeth Mandrell and her children.

I found Bodden Farm in Doulting but there was no Sarah there in 1851

The information I've given you had already been transcribed so I have not seen the original handwritten census.  The name may have been mistranscribed - maybe you can find someone with a scanned copy of the original.   Sorry not to be more help.
