Good morning All,

I have worked my way through James's Army records and here's a timeline:

March 1915 - The 1st Life Guards. Regiment number 3743. Recorded as having previously belonged to the 38th Dufferin Rifles of Canada but left to return to England.

May 1916 - Discharged permanently unfit for War service at home or abroad.

Aug 1916 - Rejoined. Gloucestershire Regiment. Number 30909.

2 Dec 1916 - Sails from Southampton to Le Havre, France.

Dec 1916 - Aug 1917 - Serves in France (Looks like "Rouen"?)

16 Aug 1917 - Sails home to Regent's Park War Hospital, Southampton.

Sep 1917 - Transferred to Royal Vistoria Hospital, Netley.

Sep 1917 - Transferred to Buxton Spa, Derbyshire.

Oct 1917 - Transferred to 3rd Northern General Hospital, Sheffield.

Nov 1917 - Discharged from the hospital and also from the Army as medically unfit.

The Canadian Archives informed me that service files prior to WWI were not kept.

Not sure whether this timeline helps with the uniforms at all?

Thanks again for your help,
Glen

They are not the Life Guards nor the Glosters.

The cap badge may be Canadian or possibly the Border regiment but they are quite indistinct.

Thanks tonepad! I've never noticed that white writing before!!!

It reads the following I think:

"Graystone ?"
"Bttn."

It's the name of the photographer: Graystone Bird. He was based in Bath.
"Graystone Bird"
"Bath"

Thanks so much for your replies.

How intriguing that he's not in the Life Guards nor Gloucester uniform!

And thanks for solving the mystery of the white writing. I've just had a Google for Graystone Bird and found many mentions of him. Evidently there are other unidentified Army group shots of his.

Would it help if I re-scanned the photos at a high resolution?

Best wishes,
Glen
