Good Evening,

I am looking for a William Smith born 21 Jan 1883 (source 1939 register) who was allegedly born in Nottingham (source 1911 census) & father Thomas Smith. Just trying to identify his birth or baptism.

Does the 1911 give any actual area/district of Nottingham or does it just say Nottingham?

If he had no middle names - there are 2 births in the Nottingham RD on freebmd.  Both in the March qtr 1883

William Smith  Nottingham    7b   334   - mothers maiden name Rogers

Presume you got his fathers name from his marriage cert - what was his fathers occupation

Thank you for your response.  When William married in 1906 in Barnsley, his father was shown as a deceased bricklayer & gave an address in Grimethorpe, so at some point between his birth and his marriage he or his family must have moved from Nottingham to Yorkshire.

Tricky one. 

Searching for William on the 1891 census with a father Thomas shows none with a match to an occ of bricklayer-  but he may have died between 1883-1891. 

Too many deaths in Notts on freebmd between 1883-1891 for Thomas Smith

Always the possibility that William was illegit and made up a fathers name etc when he married so as to appear "respectable"

Your only hope is to search the 1881 census for Thomas Smith in Notts with an occ of bricklayer. 

I did an 1881 search for that name with a birthyear between 1845-1865 living in Notts and there were 98 entries so rather a formidable task

The witnesses were both on the wife's side!

What I plan to do is to apply to the GRO for his BC in 1883, with the father's name Thomas.  That way if it doesn't fit they will refund me the fee.  I'm about 90% sure now it is the Mar 1883 Nottingham birth with mmn Rogers.

Hi,

looks like William was living in Conisbrough Doncaster in 1901 census as a step son with a David Lowe,  mother as Sarah Ann and Smith siblings, have checked siblings birth details and all have mother's surname as Rogers.

Not sure if I can post census details here so will pm them to you.

David Lowe and Sarah Smith married Doncaster June Qtr 1898 Vol 9c page 1333.

Of course it may not be the Smith's you are looking for but worth a look.
