Did they go to Canada, the 1881 Canadian census shows a family of Peter's living in Ontario

1841
HO107 / 697 Book 9 Folio 20 Page33
She is with parents Joseph & Hannah
Mary Street Tower Hamlets
Joseph Amer 30 occ Cow Keeper
Hannah Amer 30
Sophia Amer 15
all born in the county

As a bit of historical trivia - Cow Keeper would not have meant that Joseph worked on a farm.  In many parts of London there were people keeping one or two cows - they earned an income by selling milk to local residents.

Charles was a watchmaker his father was Thomas Peter occ Surgeon
Sophias father was Joseph Amer occ Cow Keeper

The surgeon's son and the cowkeeper's daughter - what a great Victorian melodrama that would have made!
(Sorry, I'm starting to be silly now  ;))

Until the advent of the railways milk was supplied from cows actually kept in the towns, or just outside, by cow keepers, and the milk bought from them by Milk Dealers.
