huggins ancestors in Durban

Just wondering if anyone knows how to access passenger lists for arrivals in Durban in late 1870s . I am looking for Ann Huggins, and her adult children Alexander, Osborne and Ernest. Also around that time Henry and Agnes Amy Redman and their daughter Rhoda and possibly Florence and John Simmonds.

Hi. Unfortunately there are not many ship lists in South Africa. I found nothing for Huggins or Simmonds, but did find a Miss Rhoda Redman who sailed on Donald Currie & Co's Balmoral Castle leaving London on 12 November 1879. A Mr and Mrs Redman are also listed, but with no initials. It appears that the list of those who sailed was published in the British Mail on 1 December 1879.

thank you so much nookie , That confirms what I was told , now my question is  -- was their  son Lawrence John Henry Redman  born in South Africa or UK as his birth year was supposedly 1878 ?  Do you have access to Ancestry.com by any chance ?

Unfortunately I don't have access to Ancestry. On the entry showing the 3 Redman's there was nothing for another passenger, so one has to assume he might have been born in South Africa. Will have a look and see if I can pick up a baptism. Did see that there was a death for an Osborne Huggins in 1931 in the Cape, and also one for a Osborne Ernest Huggins in 1961 in the Transvaal. Did not look at them, but will do if you are interested.

thanks for that, yes I do know about the deaths of the two osbornes but if you found a baptism or birth for lawrence that would be wonderful.

I can't readily see a birth registration for Lawrence in England and Wales 1877-78.  Not sure whether either of you know about FreeBMD where you can search for birth, marriage and death registrations within England and Wales from 1 July 1837.

Hi:  WRY is the abbreviation for West Riding of Yorkshire.  And Family Search is Latter Day Saints - they have very good records for South Africa.  FreeBMD is a free website which is in the process of transcribing the birth, marriage and death registrations in England and Wales since July 1837.
