Invalid Prison Woking Surrey

Just found an ancestor of mine was in the above prison 1881 census. Can anyone explain what type of prison it was. I also want explore what he did to get there.

His name was Thomas Guest aged 41 (about) from Dudley Worcestershire.

Thomas Guest 34 (Iron roller) -10 years penal servitude being a ticket of leave man and having been five times previously convicted for stealing a watch, two coats and other articles at Dudley on February 15th

Hi Grampy1, in answer to your question about what type of prison it was, Woking Invalid Convict Prison was the first purpose built, permanent prison was mentally and physically disabled prisoners. It was typically a dumping ground for those who acquired disability or illnesses whilst serving their sentences elsewhere. Woking had up to date facilities, trained medical staff and could manage a whole host of maladies which other prisons could not.
