Dolphin - Fender Maker
« on: Tuesday 03 October 17 18:57 BST (UK) »
Has anyone come across a DOLPHIN with occupation Fender Maker? I have John Dolphin, fender Maker  born about 1811 (died 1848 aged 37, married 1828, b 1811 per 1841 census) and no idea where he may have come from. On the offchance that he may have followed in his father's footsteps, i would love to hear of any other Dolphin fender makers. Per 1841, he said he was born in Warwickshire whereas his wife MAry Ann Dipple said she was not. Many Thanks.

FindMyPast has the baptism of a John Dolphin on 14 October 1810 (born 1809), at Deritend and Bordesley, Warwickshire: parents Charles and Mary Dolphin. Unfortunately it's only a transcript - no original image available.

Adult ages on the 1841 census were supposed to be rounded down to a multiple of 5 years.
So John's stated age of 30 means he could be aged between 30 and 34.

Therefore this baptism is looking good?

Christening Date 14th October 1810
At St John, Deritend and Bordesley, Warwickshire
Birth Date 14th August 1809
John Dolphin, son of Charles and Mary Dolphin

Spotted on FamilySearch; already typed it up, so I'll post it anyway! ;D

The above would make sense as Floodgate st. was in Deritend & staying in the area of birth was common in B'ham, also fender making involved brass casting which was big business in B'ham. The process having been invented there. Deritend was very industrialised.

They were living in Floodgate st. in 1841.
Brass fenders is the most likely, for coal fires.
If you look in the trade directories you'll probably find a few in the area.

Are you researching Dolphin? I eventually found them after I read John Dolphin's Death Cert and saw that the informant was Mathilda, who I presumed to be his DAU. I then had to look through Matilda with no surname in  1841 Brum and, of course, as soon as I spotted the transcription Dolphir, I knew I had found them.

I'm not researching them.
I notice there's a Banns of Marriage at St. Edburgha's in Yardley in 1797 between a Charles Dolphin & Mary Lowe.
If it's them it may account for why she's listed as not born in County on the 1841 census as at this time Yardley was in Worcs.
Their 1st. child was born in 1801 so quite possible.
I also notice a daughter Priscilla born 1815 with parents Charles & Mary living in Digbeth, he was a chain maker.
Priscilla married in 1835 & the witnesses were John & Mary Dolphin.
