1861/1851 Census for Lancs/Yorks for SAVILLE
« on: Tuesday 02 August 05 12:28 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to trace who Edward SAVILLE’s ancestors were.  I have the following Census information below:

1901 - Sheffield
Edward SAVILLE, 54, Publican, Mosley – Lancs
Isabella SAVILLE, 50, ,Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs

1891 – Pennington
Edward SAVILLE, 44, Licensed Victualer, Mosley – Lancs
Isabella SAVILLE, 40, ,Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs
John E SAVILLE, 16, Assists at home, Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs

1881 – Ashton-under-Lyne
Edward SAVILLE, 34, Coal Miner, Mosley – Yorks
Isabella SAVILLE, 30, ,Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs
John E SAVILLE, 5, , Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs

1871 – (Unable to read Census page)
Edward SAVILLE, 24, Coal Miner, Lees, Oldham – Lancs
Isabella SAVILLE, 20, ,Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs

Edward and Isabella were married on 28 March 1869, Ashton-u-Lyne, in the presence of Patrick Murphy and Alice Roberts.

I also have a copy of a birth cert for an Edward SAVILLE, but this I believe is probably incorrect, as it has him being born in Huddersfield Poor House, in 1847.

Isabella (JONES) is in Aston-u-Lyne in the 1861 Census.

I really have no idea where Edward was prior to 1869.  Can anyone please help with look-ups in the 1861 and 1851 Census from either Lancashire (or Yorkshire), particularly in those areas mentioned above?

Regards

David

I double-checked 1871:
Details are correct. He is in Linthorpe, Yorkshire.

RG10/4896 Stockton (Yarm)  Fol 77

Does Edward have mention of any father on his marriage certificate?

Hi Pauline/Tanja,

On his birth cert, there is no mention of a father, only his mother, Caroline.  This is most likely why this Edward was born in the Poor House at Huddersfield - unmarried mother, very taboo at that time.

I can't help but think that this may be wrong, as it contradicts all the Census' details about his birth place.

The 1861 would make sense to me, a) because birthplace location is, I believe, in the same area as Mosley/Oldham, and b) - a longshot - the fact that he became a Publican in later life.  Influenced by David Wass in his early years?

If he is on the 1851 Census anywhere, that just may tie things up.........or will it!  :-

Thank you both for your responses.

Regards

David
