Death in Cuba 1849 - where is the best place to research this?
« on: Tuesday 19 September 17 13:57 BST (UK) »
An ancestors headstone in Greenock Cemetery records that William Mackie, born 20 January 1829 in Rothes, Elgin died on 30 August 1849 in Matanzas, Cuba.

I have researched a lot of open source websites on Google and cannot find any guides or sites which help me find more information about this man or any event in Cuba which would lead to his early death barring an accident.

As he was from Greenock it is very likely that there is a connection to sugar.

Are there any of the pay sites (Ancestry etc) which hold death records, shipping records etc which might help in my search. If so what one would you recommend?

Any other links would also be appreciated in relation to employment records etc.

Family Search has a selection of Cuba BDM but nothing for a Wm Mackie b 1829 d 1849. Although quite a few Wm Mackie.
If you Google Cuba Genealogy there are quite a few groups who might help.
He may well have died of disease too.

You see all of this on the headstone?

"William Mackie, born 20 January 1829 in Rothes, Elgin died on 30 August 1849 in Matanzas, Cuba."

What else is on the headstone?.  Do you have an image of the headstone?

I thought, with a stone like that, that the death of someone in Cuba would be in the newspapers,  I can’t see anything.

I can't see any mention on this tombstone of William Mackie died Cuba?

I can't see any mention of a William dying in Cuba either.  The headstone lists William  who died in 1880 and a son who died in infancy.

A search of FindaGrave for William Mackie comes up with this headstone and details of William who died in Cuba in 1849 - strange.  :-\
