House numbering

Hi
I have someone who's address in 1954 was Lot 89 xxx Road, Sylvania Heights.
Would I be right in assuming Lot 89 became house number 89?
Don't want to go and look at the wrong house!

How would I be able to check?

I'm in NSW and I'd have to check my rates notice, but I'm rather sure my Lot number is different to my house number.

It would be worth emailing Sutherland Shire Council and asking them.

Lot number relates to the estate/area plan that was created when the property was surveyed. This is part of the real property description of your land. There can be multiple street numbers for one lot number (allowing for redevelopment of large allotments) and there can be multiple streets covered on the one plan.

It would be pure luck if a house number and a lot number were the same.

Theoretically, you can search by lot number in the NSW Land & Property Information Historical Land Records Viewer [http://www.lpi.nsw.gov.au/land_titles/historical_research], which includes pre-digitalisation maps. It's quite challenging to use though.

The lot number for our house is 20 but the house number is 17.

The odd numbers are on the south side of the street, and the even numbers are on the north side.
