Hi,

Parts of the 1851 Ashton under Lyne Census were water damaged.   Perhaps this is why we can`t find him on Stamford Street I certainly can`t find a 109 .

Ooooh! Just spotted Iria`s message.  As Ann was still married on the 1861 and there are no other James Mellor`s that fit the bill, this certainly looks likely to be him -  I wonder what he did?
If you ever find out do let us know.

Regards.

Hi Iria,
I had spotted him at Warrington St - it's likely to be him.

I haven't yet traced the reason why he was in prison, not really sure quite where to look for this. Presumably local newspaper archives if accesible would contain this detail.

Hi Iria,
I have looked on 1837online and Ancestry but can't find the entry you have located for James in Woking Prison, would prison institutions be included in their extracts ?.

Peter,
I have just found your 2005 corresp. on subject of James Mellor, alleged convict. Did you ever find out what he did? I am new to rootschat so don't really know how it works or how to talk privately to you, but if you have a family bible it seems to me that you must be a senior member of my family. I am a gt grandson of his son James William Mellor, who was also a solicitor. I have acquired a number of documents such as his actual wedding record from Huddersfield, his father Joseph's will and his marriage records from Ashton, first to Ann Harrop and secondly to Elizabeth Willetts.  Would love to share discoveries with you, but you might have to guide me through the rootschat process. Alternatively, are you a member of Genes Reunited?

Mikkel.

Mikkel,

I have sent you a personal message as well as this posting. James Mellor was convicted of fraud in March 1858 and sentenced to Life imprisonment and died in Woking Invalid Prison in August 1861. I have all the details relating to his conviction and also information on his family which I can let you have. From what you say you may be able to fill a few gaps for me.

Regards
Peter

Iria,

Harking back 3 years... how on earth did you manage to find James Mellor in Woking prison when only his initials are given on the census? Can you educate me please? I love to learn new tricks - I'm actually only just learning to use RootsChat & I seem to need to post a number of messages before I can start to use PMs, so this msg has a dual purpose!

Many thanks,

Mikkel.

Hello Peter, I know it is a long time since you first started this thread, but I have only just seen it! We bought 55 Alma Road 2 years ago and we would dearly love to know its previous history and anything at all to do with it. Do you know anything at all more aboutthe house and its owner?
Kind Regards,
Eric.
