1851 Ashton Under Lyne James Mellor

I am trying to find out where James Mellor Born 1798 was born, also the maiden name of his wife Anne. He died according to the family bible on 26th August 1861 but he is not on the 1861 census !

He was an attorney and lived at 109 Stamford Street  in 1832 (Aston Trade Directory)

His Widow and Children appear on the 1861 census living at 55 Alma Street, Birkdale.
as follows :-

Anne b 1798  b Skipton
Charles b 1834  Ashton
Eliza b 1836  Ashton
James b 1826 Ashton
Miriam b 1838 Ashton

They were married according to the family bible on the 4 th October 1820, but I have been unable to trace where or what Anne's maiden name was.

I would be grateful for any help in finding this information.

Eliza Mellor, 6 yrs, born in the county
Miriam Mellor, 3 yrs, born in the county
Elizabeth (Hurst?/Street?), 32 yrs, F. Servant,  NOT born in the county.
Hannah Lees, 27 yrs, F. Servant, born in the county.


I cannot read the name of the female servant as it is not very clear, but if you put another posting up with the piece no. and folio no. to see if someone else can decipher it, I thought as a
very long shot she could have perhaps been a sister to Ann as they were both NOT born in the county, then perhaps you can go from there.

They are not in the 1851 census on Stamford Street or Alma Street, Birkdale.

 At least James was born in the county.

I am surprised they were not on the 1851 census as the daughter Caroline died at Stamford St in March 1850.
The address I have for for 1861 should have read  55 Alma Road (not St), Birkdale.
I note your comment about the servant could be worth a try.

I just thought you might like to know that they weren't in Birkdale or Southport area in 1851 (no Mellors in Birkdale). There is one Mellor in North Meols (Southport), though, who might be useful:

Alice Mellor, visitor, aged 49, weaver born Ashton....at the home of Thomas Carr (Tailor b Southport). Address: 35 Eastbank St, Southport. She's obviously not James' wife, but could she be a sister?

I have taken a look at the 1841 AUL

The unknown male age 15 is James Wm. Mellor

The female servant is (first impression) Elizabeth Street.

I am not aware of any Mellor's in the Southport area that were related although there may have been.The reason for the family moving from AUL to Birkdale  before James's death in 1861 is not known. I have him dying on 26th August 1861 yet he is not on the 1861 census return with the rest of the family at Alma Rd, perhaps he was in hospital ?

Su, thanks for confirming that James William was the other child.Regarding the servant I have now established that James's wife Anne's maiden name was STIRK, is the servant definitely Elisabeth STREET.

I am still mystified as to where the family where in 1851 - but have got no further with this conundrum.

I was just going to suggest Ann's maiden name was Stirk.. I found them on the IGI marriage 4 Oct 1820 St. Peters Huddersfield.

I am not sure if the whole of Stamford Street is on the 1851, some of the pages keep repeating themselves.

Perhaps this is why they cannot be found there.

Can anyone confirm this for me please?

Hi Iria,

Looks like he was the black sheep of the family!
 I'll have to follow this up.No doubt if he was a crooked lawyer there will be some case records that I may be able to access via the net. This is certainly a big surprise, if it is him. the age, place of birth and occupation fit.
