Unknown English girls - dating help required, please

Hello,

This tintype is part of a collection of photographs that I have in an album belonging to one of my Lancashire families. However, I don't know who these girls are and would appreciate a bit of help to perhaps narrow down the timeframe.

My initial guess was some time in the early 1880s, although tintypes were reducing in popularity by then.

I'd also appreciate ideas on how old these girls might be.

You could be right about the date.    The dating gurus will tell you about the hats!   

The pair could be mother and daughter . . . sitting could be wearing a ring - bit hard to see.  Or maybe older sister - similar faces aren't they.  The girl standing is early teenage I am guessing - i.e. before she put her hair up, (as you can see    ! )

I had a go tidying the photo up but it is very damaged isn't it, and I am no great shakes at faces to assist the lady on the left.  What I managed I am not prepared to display it is so bad.

My first thought was mother and daughter too with the daughter standing hand on shoulder.

The younger one looks about 12-14 so agree early teenage. The older lady early 30's?

I agree with Wiggy's observations: the girl standing up looks to me about 12; the one sitting is definitely closely related, but hard to tell her age - looks plumper but you can't see any lines or other clues, could be anywhere between 30 and 45 I'd guess. I don't think I can see a ring though. (PS: I left in the little "spot" that could be a ring if I'm wrong.)

1880's is about right. Taken in a booth which is why it's a tintype as it gave an instant picture.

Thanks very much for your replies.

I actually had them as sisters, the younger one being about 11-12 and the older one.....well, a bit older! 

I didn't know that about tintypes and booths, thanks.

If I said 1888 would anyone think that too late?  I've been looking through my tree and the 1880s falls between generations, so to speak. The majority of people are either into adulthood or under 10.

Apart from two girls, Hannah and Mary Ann. Hannah would be 15 in 1888 and Mary Ann 12.

I think the one sitting down is wearing glasses.

If the picture were Hannah and Mary Ann.... this is a picture of Hannah later in life. I think it could be her.

I too thought the seated female was wearing round framed glasses and the later photo bears a strong resemblance to her....also there doesn't appear to be a wedding ring on the older female and I think she is too young to be the mother of the girl standing.
