Help with name on Census, please
« on: Wednesday 30 August 17 19:41 BST (UK) »
Could anyone help with the name of the grandson in this 1851 Census? It looks like 'Luis' to me but I've seen it transcribed as 'And' on Freecen. The grandparents are Andrew McCallum and wife Agnes.

Would appreciate any opinions on this.

It looks like Luis to me too but, as a check, have you got any Ls on the page that you can show - or give the ref.

Thanks for your reply, Gadget. The couple did have a grandson named Andrew who would have been about the same age as the boy recorded here (18) but I think the name of the boy looks very different from the abbreviated Andrew for the grandfather. I don't know if they had a grandson called 'Luis' but they definitely had a son named Louis (recorded as Lewis in the 1841 Census). I've noticed on Ancestry the grandson's name has been transcribed as 'Vino'. I'll have another look at the Census page for other letter 'L's.

I think I've got the family - in Galston?

It's been transcribed as Andrew on another site too.  There should be an L for Mary Black - Lodger.

ADDED - last letter looks same as the d in Grandson so maybe they used a different abbreviation for the younger Andrew!

Here's the word 'Labourer' from the same page, the only other capital 'L' I could see. I missed 'Lodger'.
Yes, it's Galston.

It's not an L then - must be And. I think the A looks as if it's formed  a bit like an  ุ with the final bit of the ) more or less invisible  :-\

So   ุnd

Thanks again, Gadget. Here's the word 'Lodger' from the page with the 'L' looking very similar to the 'L' in 'Labourer'. Maybe the transcribers at Freecen are right and it's Andrew after all.

Yes - I should have added a full stop at the end of And. What is strange is the Andw for grandfather but just And for grandson.

Meant to say that I think  they're both abbreviations for Andrew though  :)
