Gateshead Fell & Sheriff Hill

In 2008 member 'MIS' posted "Gateshead Fell 1800's, 1900s. Can I help anyone?".

Is anyone living near there able to pick this one up?
My GG Grandfather lived on Sheriff Hill in the 1841 Census.
I would like to find what the actual address was and if the house is still there.

If you go to the 1st page, there should be a description of the enumeration district.
Bearing that in mind, it might be possible to track the street name?

But addresses were simply not important in 1841 :-\
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

This map may help you to locate the area.  From the enumerator's walk, Team Waggon Way is mentioned, and the map shows Team Colliery with a railway line close by.

Street numbering did not become formalised in towns until the 1850s at the earliest. Census enumerators were given very clear instructions with regard to the provision of address data. In 1841 it was only necessary to give the name, if any, of the house, part of the town, village or hamlet in which it stood.

Hi jonsops,

I live a couple of miles away, if you can get an address from a later Census, I can take a look for you.

A number of my ancestors lived (and died) in Gateshead Fell & Sheriff Hill, and I was born at the Hospital across the road  :)

That map is brilliant! Thank you.

The map has Wrekenton on, which is particularly close to my heart, as my GG Grandfather moved there from Galway, Ireland.

Yes, that is the correct transcript.
I have looked  at page one but cannot make it fit with today's map.

The map is fantastic.
I have only a vague idea of the area as I have only been through it twice.
I'm from New Zealand, but my wife is from Wingate, Co Durham.
Coincidence is a funny thing. We met in Hong Kong. Then I find that my family originated from quite near to hers.
