Sorry I've only just seen this request, but one of my relations was involve in the attempted rescue of the men trapped inside the Air Raid shelter at Pease's Transport that fateful night. Unfortunately they were only able to rescue one man, but there is a WW2 Civil Defence Gallantry Award report on Ancestry (originally from the National Archives) detailing the rescue attempt. Here's the Ancestry link,
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/1253:9160 but let me know if you'd prefer the actual documents (10 pages). I'm not sure it names your Great Grandfather by name, but more about those involved in the rescue.
