It does look as though the only way for you to get any more information on his Army service is to get his service records, sadly they are expensive £30.  At least now you have some information from Max as to the regiments he could have been in  ;D

If you do send for his record and establish that he did serve in the Wiltshire Regiment then I happen to live 8 miles from their museum and, although they don't have personal files, they may have other information of interest that I'd be delighted to search out.
