As he was born c1901 (Pewsey)  there is a possibility he was  still serving after 1920 in which case his records would still be with the Ministry of Defence.  To get a copy of those would cost £30.

thank you Rosie I appreciate the help.   Growing up In Western Australia I was never taught anything about England so this has definitely been a learning experience

It is certainly a good way of learning about England.  ;D

It will be difficult to establish what Naylor did as there is not much available online after his birth c1901.
We know that Ida had a child in 1922 Kings Norton, presumably with her husband.  She then has 3 children registered in Pewsey RD between Sept qtr 1928 & March qtr 1935 registered with her husbands surname.  Where does your direct line fit in.

ADDED
James Harnes mmn Harnes birth reg Pewsey Sept qtr 1926 - a sister born the year before also Pewsey.

It is a bit circumstantial but Pewsey is a town in Wiltshire (about 10 miles from me), there was still a Naylor family there in 1939 (reading it wrongly!)  There were still a number of Hughes families there in 1939.  The local regiment at that time was the Wiltshire Regiment the 1st Battalion of which  was sent to Shanghai in 1931, leaving in 1932.http://www.thewardrobe.org.uk/research/history-of-regiments/the-duke-of-edinburghs-wiltshire-regiment-1881-1920-the-wiltshire-regiment-duke-of-edinburghs-1920-1959

The way to go is first to follow Rosie's advice and apply for his records.  That will confirm his regiment (Wiltshire's if my guess is right!) and show where and when he served. The process is described in the link Rosie gave.  You don't need his service number but you do need his date of birth and his death certificate.

If you need any help with that, just ask!

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Thanks for that link Max.

It is always nice to see photo's of these places, I only see Pewsey as I go through on the train to Westbury.  ;D

To be absolutely correct, both battalions of the Wiltshire Regiment were in Shanghai in the 1929-1932 period at different times.  There were however, other troops there at the same time in the Shanghai Garrison, hence the need for his records to establish which regiment Naylor Hughes served with.
