Daniel Devlin in Omagh
« on: Thursday 29 July 04 02:31 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any info on Daniel Devlin from Omagh, born 1864.  Devlins were reportedly "one of the rare Catholics in Orange country".  He left for the U.S. but I'm not sure when.  He settled with wife Ellen L. Cassidy in Yonkers, New York and 9 children, the first (we think) born in 1890.  I don't know if he met Ellen in Tyrone or in the U.S.  Thank you.

Hi dunnontn

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

I haven't made any progress yet.  I've requested a copy of his death certificate from NYS.  It takes around 9-10 months for a reply.  I'm hoping to get Daniel's date of birth and parents' names from the death certificate so I can then post a new request for information.  Thank you for asking.

dunnontn,
I too have DEVLINs from the Omagh area (but closer to Gortin in the parish of Bodoney Lower - R.C. chapel of Rousky).  Do you have a more specific townland name or parish name?  Also, would you have Daniel's parents' names?  If so, I might be able to find them amongst my own DEVLIN research (e.g. 1901 Census).  If you know of any siblings' names, please post that as well.
Coincidentally, I was born and raised in Yonkers, New York.

I have no additional information and am STILL waiting for NYS to send me a copy of his death certificate.  I can tell you the names of Daniel's children though:  Eileen, Joseph, Richard, Martha, Kathleen, Una Moira, Daniel, and Robert Emmett.
Joseph had a daughter Eileen and a son Robert.
Eileen married James Vavasour.
Robert Emmett married Mary Bentley.
Martha married Frank Garrett.
John married Phoebe.
Kathleen and Una never married.
I am hoping to get more information from the death certificate and will repost if I do.  Feel free to contact me at email address removed by moderator to prevent spamming - please contact via personal message And thanks for responding!

dunnontn,
Your personal e-mail was blocked from your message.  On the Yonkers, New York front, do you know where they lived (& when) or the parish name?  You might get some useful information from the baptismal certificate.

You postings indicate that you sent your request to N.Y. *State*.  Yonkers keeps its own vital records so you should get it from Yonkers directly.    Follow the link to the site where you can get the dowloadable forms http://www.cityofyonkers.com/government2/clerk.htm

I just called the Clerk's Office who says they have Yonkers births and death records from 1875 to present.

Regards,
Clare

I received a copy of the death certificate today.  The date of birth is listed as August 5, 1867 (different year than that on his tombstone) and the date of death differs by a few days but at least his wife is the same.  No additional information as to where in Tyrone he was born but parents are listed as Daniel J. Devlin and Susan Graham.

My grandmother, Mary Devlin was born about 1880 between Omagh and Gortin, a protestant. Looking at your information some thing strikes me. You say a Catholic in Orange County was unusual. perhaps that is partly why he emigrated - famine Protestant.
His mother's name is rather Protestant. My grandmother's family were certainly Catholic at the end of the 1700s and owned a lot of land between Gortin and Newtownstewart; but were supplanted by an English family, the Blackston Houstons of Beltrim and driven into poverty. Her family was decimated by a flu epidemic early 1900s or late 1800s. Her one surviving brother, John Alexander emigrated to the eastern USA and became a medical student; but died before the first world war.
You may need to look at Protestant records from Tyrone too.

Hiya Dunnontn,

I have had a look at the surname Devlin in Co. Tyrone during the period of Griffiths Valuation of Ireland 1848-64 http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php The Valuation in Tyrone took place in 1851.  I looked at the Christian names of the boys of Daniel J. Devlin and Susan (nee Graham) and found their Christian names as well as the surname Graham in the Parish of Arboe. The surname Cassidy also appeared in the same Parish. It is a very rough and ready system, accuracy not guaranteed, but the surname Devlin is well known in that Parish. I am looking for a Margaret Devlin. I am not sure where or when she was born but the mid to late 1880s in the Parish of Arboe are a possibility.  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,153493.0.html

All the Best, Chris
