As Stan says there is a report in the Newcastle Courant in 1887.
This James Pringle was tried along with 4 others and sentenced at Gateshead on 6th Jan 1887 to 3 months imprisonment for stealing a box containing crockery and jam from the premises of a provision dealer in High St Gateshead. The report says they had all been previously convicted of larceny. No ages or addresses given for any of the accused.
Without any details of 'your' James Pringle, apart from his name, its hard to guess if this is the right person or not.
