1861 Census - GRAVES/GREAVES
« on: Monday 24 July 17 20:47 BST (UK) »
Have been struggling for 5 years to locate Elizabeth and Edward Graves/Greaves on 1861 census.

Edward married Elizabeth Horsfall Crowther on 8 Feb 1861, so I would have presumed they would be living together on the 1861 census in Liverpool or a part of Lancashire, as they were married in Liverpool.

Elizabeth was born 1839 in Birkenhead
Edward was born between 1811-1831 possibly Chichester. His birth year seems to variate.

There's an Edward Greaves b.1808 living in Liverpool on the 1861 census but he's a widower and seems to die in around 1868. Locating the 1861 census would really help me break down the brick wall of Edward's mysterious birth !

Many Thanks for any help :)

Hi the only two census returns I can positively locate him are the 1871 when he is aged 45 b Sussex RG10/3798/28/50 and 1881 aged 51 b Chichester RG11/3684/14/21, I believe Elizabeth dies as Elizabeth Horsfall Graves Dec qtr 1885 West Derby aged 48, and Edward dies as Edward Graves March qtr 1890 West Derby aged 60?
On both census returns he is shown as a Mariner.

Hi, yes that's him on the 1871 and 1881 censuses- the only two censuses I can find my tricky Edward on! I have Elizabeth on all censuses alive apart from 1861. Even if Edward, as a mariner, was sailing on the 1861 census, I would have thought his wife would be staying behind somewhere in Liverpool?

That's also the correct death record. I have both death and marriage certificate- if they're scanned on my computer I'll try and attach them. (Not entirely sure how)

on the 1861 marriage, Edward's father is another Edward and a supposed farmer. I've had no luck finding him either. The marriage is under 'Greaves' and there is no age. Edward's a mariner again. He and Elizabeth are supposedly living at Norfolk Street/Place (slightly illegible) Then again, one of my other ancestors in London quoted her residence on her son's baptism. Two days later, on the census, a completely different family were living there, and she was no where to be seen! I'm inclined to think my ancestors were all liars!

Witnesses were Elizabeth's sister and a Henry (?) Roberts ? Noblet?

Wow, thank you! Might not have located the 1861 but here's another dimension to his confusing life- a trip to Australia!

I apologize I should have referenced my source.
It's on ancestry under passenger lists arriving Sydney Australia, which was deceptive but worth a look
and found him under the crew list.

Is it under this

New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922?

I only have a British/Irish membership to ancestry, which is why I've probably never seen it! Might be worth upgrading to worldwide to see if i can espy any of my other ancestors.

I obtained large a3 copies from the National Archives of all of Edward's details when he was serving. Unfortunately, he can't seem to decide on his birth year on those either! I can't find a baptism at all, so if i found the 1861, if he was ever on it! would be interesting to see where he put his birth place down as and as what age. Its curious where Elizabeth disappeared to as well!
