Thank you so much for those. I'll dig out my file on that family now and see if I can fit them in! Margaret born to Brophy and Ann Cashin seems to be a good match to be mine I think. Castletown was only a small village back then wasnt it, so it wouldn't be likely there'd be a few Margaret Bropheys around the same time?

(do you know what "sponsors" would have done? pay for the christening? godparents?)

Thanks again
Best Wishes

hi

 sponsers were the godparents

Catletown is still  a small place, the parish of Castletown covers a larger area.  The christening in question  Margaret Brphy says they live a Rushall, a townland just outside the village.

My dad always says that the Brophy's came from the Pike of Rushall, and this is the first evidence I have of anyone with the name living there.  It needs further investigation  to say whether we have a connection or not.

Thanks for those Jack. Would be interesting to compare the values to todays money. Some would have been considered reasonably comfortable looking at some of those values, wouldn't they?

Unless I can access the parish records though, I don't know how to confirm which, if any, are "mine"

Thanks again

Hi Catherine/Anne Elizabeth, I know your postings are from several years ago, but only just seen them. My grandmother Margaret Fahy was originally Brophy, and lived in the Pike of Rushall. She was born in 1877/8 and could be a niece or g niece of your Margaret. I don't think there are any Brophys still in that area, however the West family in Mountrath (about 5 miles from Rushall) are related and are likely to have further info. No address.

Good luck.

Hi
I have a Bridget Brophy - I know she was born in Laois County around 1837.  She married John Conroy in Clonaslee in Feb 1857.  I don't know any of Bridget's siblings or parent's names.  Perhaps there is a connection with your Margaret.  The youngest daughter of John and Bridget was named Margaret.  She was born in 1876 and immigrated to NY.
