Hi
I think the 1816 Samuel is most likely mine: his father is Thomas, and age fits with 20 given in 1841. If he had been born 1822 as he implies in all other census or 1824 as given at probable marriage, he'd have been listed as 15.  Also fits with an age at death I have. So looking good. Thanks for info on Methodists.
Regards Jan ;)

Sorry I’ve taken so long to get back to you.

Firstly – Samuel Underwood. Unfortunately Bedford library did not have the baptism circuit book after all so I couldn’t check it out for you. Perhaps someone else could check at Luton library for you?

I then checked a few of the other 1851 census index books & also came up blank! (Can’t find my piece of paper though with the volumes I checked – sorry ???)

Checked Clophill PR Marriages 1807 Au 18 Thomas Underwood = Elizabeth Smith (no other info I’m afraid)

Checked the burials at Clophill on the fiche – some of which were unreadable because they were so faint.

1813-1850

No 705 Isaac Underwood Clophill Feb 25 1847 aged 23
killed by accident (written underneath)

No 724 Thomas Underwood Oct 5 1847 aged 65

IGI Have you seen these? All at Harper St Wesleyan Methodist, Bedford

Isaac Underwood bn 12.1.1824 c 8.2.1824 son of Thomas & Elizabeth Underwood

George c 23.1.1832 son of George & Mary Underwood
Ann bn 25.8.1823 c 3.2.1834 dau of George & Mary Underwood

Possibly a newspaper article/obituary for Isaac somewhere perhaps?

Think all the Methodist baptisms tie in nicely, with Samuel, George & Charles all in the Methodist or Weslyan Bedford Circuit book. Elizabeth & Benjamin bp at Clophill Parish church for some reason though.

Thomas Underwood is also mentioned in the will of Richard Brooks of Clophill 1810. (May be other refs)

If there is anything else in the registers you would like me to check just ask.

Regards

criggy

Thank you for all that Criggy. I daresay Samuel will turn up one day - at least I know he's alive in 51, the last person I lost on that census turned out to have died and her husband had inconsiderately married another Ann to lead me astray  ;D
Cheers Jan ;)

Have checked the 1851 surname index for the whole of Beds apart from Volume 3, Book 4 which is missing from local library. This one covers Biggleswade.

Samuel and Hannah nowhere to be found in all the other volumes.

I can try and check the marriage at LS Mary unless you have already done so.

Thanks for looking - wonder where they are hiding ???  I'll try getting someone to check in Bucks as that is where Hannah was born. If you could check the marriage that would be great.
Cheers Jan ;)

Was able to check Vol 3 Book 4 for Biggleswade today. No Samuel or Hannah Underwood. If not at Wavendon then I would perhaps check the area East of Luton......families seem to go back and forth from that area......part of Herts.

The marriage of Samuel and Hannah at Luton St Mary.

5/7/1850 Samuel Underwood x, 26, ba, Lab, of Luton, (father Thomas Underwood, Bootmaker) married after banns
Hannah Payne x, 21, sp, of Luton, (father John Payne, lab)
Witness, Samuel Hayden, Jane Wickins

Thanks Waterfall. I've been sitting here for a week petrified that I'd missed them when I went through the Luton census pages! I was hoping you'd find them in a village just outside Luton. No such luck
