Thanks David.  Enumerators'  writing certainly can be appalling.
Maybe someone with index will be able to find Samuel - criggy where are you?

Yes, thank you David. I'd long suspected that George's sister Sarah married Thomas Squires.

Paul, I've just noticed that are two daughters on the next page, despite a blank line at the bottom of the page after Sarah Squires. If it wasn't a continuation you would never had read Squires!

Mary Ann Squires dau of Thomas 2 b Clophill
Sarah Elizabeth Squires dau 7mths b Clophill

Cheers David. I'd presumed those two had died before the census.

Hi everyone

I haven't a copy of any 1851 index booklets myself I'm afraid so can only look things up on shopping trips to Luton or Bedford libraries.

However, I am going to Bedford (dentist  :() on Tuesday so if there is an area you would like me to check I will look for Samuel Underwood in one or two more of the other census booklets if I have time.

I think (from memory) I came across a baptism for a Samuel Underwood, son of Thomas & Elizabeth on the IGI (Methodist). Have you checked this entry in the Methodist circuit book for a place of abode? If not they may have a copy at Bedford library!

If it would help I could check out the Underwood burials for you at my local library sometime.

Regards

Hi Criggy
Didn't realise you had to go to the library to look in index - just recalled you kindly finding my Farrs in 51. Not sure where to suggest - Samuel was born in Clophill and was there with family in 41 but isn't there or in any parish in Vol4 books 1 and 2 in 51. He and his wife Hannah are in Luton (St Mary's) in 61 and onwards and I also  have a probable marriage for them in 1850 in St Marys, so that is where I would have expected to find them. However David has made a marathon trawl (twice!) through Luton and been unable to find them. Given enumerators' appalling handwriting perhaps you could check Luton index just in case? and nearby parishes such as Stopsley if possible? Whatever you have time for.
Yes I've seen the IGI entry for Samuel's probable birth, but what is the Methodist circuit book?
Thanks for your kind offer. Good luck with the dentist.
 Regards Jan ;)

Hi there

Will see what I can do.

The Methosist/Wesylan ministers had/have several parishes which they visit in turn. The baptisms are then entered in a single book which covers all these parishes & usually states where they were from.

I have just checked the IGI & there are the following entries
for Samuel Underwood, son of Thomas & Elizabeth which you have already seen.

bn 27.7.1816 c 23.3.1817 Methodist or Weslyan Methodist Bedford Circuit & another entry with the same dates -Wesylan Methodist Ampthill.

The Ampthill circuit book may well cover Clophill & would probably say something like "Clophill" in the Abode column. This baptism was obviously entered in both books.

In the libraries they usually have typed printed copies of the entries. Will check these for you when I go.

Although the date is five years out I wouldn't discount him yet if I were you.

Regards

criggy
