Riley's of Wigan Burnley area
« on: Wednesday 19 July 17 18:23 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone, This is my first post so be gentle with me.  I have run into a wall with my Great Grandfather Edward Riley.  Born in Wigan or Burnley in 1851.  Married Agnes Martin in 1878 and apparently died between 1889 and 1890.  So many Edwards it's difficult to find the right one.  He and Agnes had 5 children.  My Grandfather Edward (b 1880), William (b 1884), Thomas (b 1884?), Patrick (b 1887) and Annorah (b 1890).  All born in Wigan or Burnley. I have no information on his mother.  His father's name was Thomas who died sometime before 1878.  No other family information prior to 1851.  No information on his death, or where it occurred.  Can supply more recent information if needed.

Wuigan and Burnley are some distance apart, so let's get one thing straight. According to the GRO site Edward and Agnes's children were born in Wigan. The names and dates are correct except for Patrick, whose birth was registered 1888 and Annorah was registered as Honora.

I cannot find an Edward Riley born 1851 in Wigan but there are two possibles born Burnley.
Edward Riley Dec 1851 Burnley vol 21 p 267 mmn Walton
Edward Riley Mar 1852 Burnley vol 8e p 180 mmn Spencer.

I have had a quick look at the 1861 Census but cannot find an Edward Riley in either Burnley or Wigan.

Hello and welcome  :)

Do you have Edward snr in a census? He is not with Agnes in 1881 and he is a widower on his marriage.
How do you know he was born in Wigan/Burnley?

Regards
Heywood

SGF28 - thanks for providing the details of his marriage

I have run into a wall with my Great Grandfather Edward Riley
Born in Wigan or Burnley in 1851.

Married Agnes Martin in 1878 and apparently died between 1889 and 1890
No information on his death, or where it occurred.

Was Annie the last child born 1891, if she's Edward's child you'd be looking for a death after 1891

RILEY, ANNIE mmn      MARTIN

Did his wife Agnes remarry a John HOUGHTON in 1892 March Quarter ?

1901c Agnes Houghton with her husband John and her children their surname Riley

I'm wondering if this might be Edward's death entry

And from GRO indexes

These are in census and Lancashire BMD also have several children born to the couple.
1891 3140/146/20

Bury would be the wrong area too. It looks as though the family move to Burnley after Agnes' second marriage as John Houghton is born Bacup.

Not if it were a posthumous birth. Agnes says she's a widow on 1891 - Anora already born, so think Annie may be another child entirely
